The 21st running of the Time Is On Your Side run occurred on Sunday, August 24 under beautiful weather conditions. The runners in both the 5K and 10K were asked to predict their finishing time and then run the race with no watches or any other electronic gadgets. This is the race that gives everyone a chance to win, as the victory goes to the most accurate, not the fastest. Rik Philpott, coach of the San Leandro High cross country team, snagged first place in the 5K with a predicted time of 22:45 versus an actual finish time of 22:46. The 10K winner, Bill Hogan, was nearly as close with a predicted time of 54:00 versus an actual finish time of 54:02.
Unfortunately, there was a mixup in the finish results for the 5K because one runner did not cross the 5K line and was never recorded on either our printing stopwatch or our results time sheet. Apparently, the runner went toward the 10K line and then turned back and delivered her tag to the person collecting 5K finish tags. The tag was counted in the order received; however, the result was that everyone's time past that point was off by one place. The results posted on the web are the official results, after correcting for the mystery runner. We are very sorry to cause some runners great anxiety with inaccurate times at the finish. Despite the redunancies and checks we have built into the finish line, there are still things that can go wrong! The 2nd and 3rd place winners, as announced on race day, actually did not have times which would have placed. They will be allowed to keep their prizes, which we will consider to be raffle prizes since it was their lucky day. The true 2nd place winner for the 5K is Judith Jarosz and the true 3rd place winner is Len Goldman. Len had the same total error as Mountain Kraus - a mere 5 seconds. However, the tie went to Len because he had the slower time and therefore a smaller % error in his prediction. Sorry, Mountain. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be too fast!
Once again, we would like to thank Transports for their continued support of this unique event. Transports provided all of the gift certificates for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Other companies who donated raffle prizes include See Jane Run and the Sports Basement, as well as additional raffle prizes from Transports. And, of course, we could not have done it without our volunteers. |
